Labour Party Pakistan federal committee member Baba Jan has been taken out of jail in Gilgit and now the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is torturing him on the name of investigation. Labour Party Pakistan will demonstrate today at Islamabad National Press Club at 4pm against this torture and more demonstration across Pakistan has been planned.

Baba Jan surrendered himself in an anti terrorist court Gilgit last week and the judge refused to sent him on police physical remand and Baba Jan was sent to jail on judicial remand. He was dragged out of jail yesterday by the intelligence agencies and handed him over to ISI.

Baba Jan “crime”, he organized rallies and demonstration against the killing of two activists near Atta Abad Lake by the police firing who were among the protesters to demand for compensation for every effect of the Atta Abad Lake.

Instead of arresting the police officers involved in killing of two activists, police registered 16 cases against Baba Jan and others. They arrested over 36 activists, however Baba Jan was protected by the community and after a month in underground, he surrendered himself at a court. At present, there are six activists arrested including Baba Jan who are facing all these fabricated charges.

Baba Jan joined Labour Party Pakistan in 2004 and was elected to the federal committee of LPP at its congress held in Faisalabad in 2010. He was one of the main leader of Peoples Youth, the PPP youth wing, he left them to join LPP and organized Progressive Youth Front (PYF) across Gilgit Baltestan. He was the first one to raise the issue of Atta Abad Lake and toured around Pakistan in 2011 to organize rallies and demonstration to highlight the plight of the villagers who lost their homes due to the emergence of this newly emerged lake because of climate change. He spoke to national media in press conferences held in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.

The issue was finally taken up by the commercial media and some compensation was paid. However the Pakistan Peoples Party government in Gilgit Baltestan did not pay compensation to all and a new movement started for the compensation. Police opened fire in July 2011 killing tow activists and Baba Jan and his comrades took up the case.

Labour Party Pakistan appeal to all human rights organizations, political parties, trade unions , youth and peasant organization to take up the case of Baba Jan to save his life.
