The Abbottabad inquiry: Nawaz Sharif’s valid demand

Yes I can agree to a judicial commission. At the same time keeping past experiences and results of past commissions we need to rally civil society on a basic agenda:
  1. The Commission should be the 5 CJs but could have members from civil society as well. This will give us a wider perspective.
  2. The hearings should be open and not in camera in line with the South African Truth and Reconciliation example.
  3. Responsibility must be established and punishment must be handed out.
  4. The Commission should look into the GHQ’s involvement in Foreign and interior policy from 1999 and not restrict itself to events of 2011.
  5. The Commission should also look at the internal unrest and security issues created by GHQ in Balochistan starting from the negotiations with Akbar Bugti and subsequent extra judicial murder.
  6. Look at the present violations of HR, torture, abductions, kidnapping, murder of political activists in Balochistan and Sindh sponsored by the ISI and GHQ.

Just my humble and off the cuff suggestions. I strongly recommend that civil society comes together on one platform and makes a set of TORs for the Commission. These can be published in newspapers and we can lobby with the government/parliament to adopt some important ones if not all of the recommendations CS can put up. I believe this is very important from the peoples security issues after all the State/parliament/armed forces or all institutions of State should be responsible to the people. By - Asad Rahman
